This past weekend we drove south through Colorado Springs to Canon City and to Prospectors RV Resort. I can't say that 'resort' is the best choice of words when describing this place because 'resort' in my book means luxury and I don't know of any campsite that are luxurious.
I spent most of Thursday running around and getting groceries for camping plus packing clothes and toiletries. Warren got home around 5 pm on Thursday evening, packed all the camping equipment in the car and we were on the road. It is a 2 hour drive from our house and we stopped at Good Times for supper & Zulu got her Good Times Paw Bender treat as well (ice cream with 3 dog biscuits). We go to the campsite in the early evening and pitched our tent in the fading light. Warren got a fire going within minutes of pitching the tent and the boys made s'mores and we sat around the fire and chatted until 11 pm before going to bed. Zulu now knows that her place is in the car when we camp and she had put herself to sleep by 9 pm which was pretty cute.
On Friday morning Jordan made a fire by himself and we cooked breakfast over it. After cleaning up we headed into the town of Canon City to a Wal-Mart there to find some metal tongs because I'd brought plastic ones and Warren likes the metal ones for moving the hot coals around in the fire. We didn't find any so we headed back to the campsite and went swimming in the pool.
The campsite has a few activities to enjoy including a water area with sprinklers plus a game room (money needed for the video games), pedal cars, ladderball, disc ball, volleyball, basketball, and horseshoes. It was very hot which meant we stayed around the pool for most of the time.
The boys took a break from the pool and tried the pedal cars. The brake on the car is a lever that you need to pull up and Cullen didn't know this so when he started going down the hill, he screamed his girly scream all the way down the hill and fortunately missed the 2 trees on the way up the next hill otherwise we'd have probably gone to the ER that day.
The campsite had a huge jumping pillow which the boys loved. It wasn't as springy as a trampoline but it was enough to keep them happy and jumping.
Although it was great to go away for 3 days, we've come to realize that we're a 2-day camping family especially since we have a tent. We've also realized that the campsites in Colorado are really geared towards RVs that have a/c or heating, their own showers, toilets, stoves, microwaves and TVs. (Hardly camping in our eyes.) Another thing we've noticed is that none of the caravans/campers have tents attached to them like the one we had as a family in South Africa. Some have an awning attached to the side but no tent. The campsite bathrooms are simple and we have yet to come across a campsite that has grass to pitch our tent on. All the sites are stony or dusty and some are actually right next to the major highway - its weird. We really miss the South African campsites!
On our way home we stopped at a War Memorial which was pretty cool since we could get up close to the planes.
The ride back was nice because it was mostly in the shade - the area is an older area with large trees and they line the Highline Canal really nicely. We also saw a lovely vintage car parked in an old shed and had to take a photo.
