My Youngest

I'm still intrigued by how different my 2 boys are. Jordan is the leader, the perfectionist, the detailed artist, he's tidy, image-conscious and has most of the first born traits. Cullen is laid-back, independent, messy, a follower, a loner and artistic in a very different way to Jordan.

This morning I was sitting in my loft at my MAC and Cullen shuffled in, sat down, logged onto the PC behind me and waited for his computer game to load. I turned around and took a quiet moment to watch him.

I grabbed my camera and snapped a few shots of this fuzzy haired kid whose feet can't reach the floor yet and who loves to pretend he is Spiderman and I fell in love with him all over again.

Downtown Stroll

After visiting the art museum, we walked down 16th Street Mall. The street is closed to vehicles except for the few horse & carriage owners and free buses that run up and down the mall, dropping passengers at their stops.

I love going downtown during the summer because there are artists, buskers, strange people, interesting people, business people and since I love to people-watch, its the perfect place for me to wander around.

Art Museum - Free Day

On the 1st Saturday of the month, the Denver Art Museum opens their doors to the public for free viewing. The last time we went to the art museum was probably over 6 years ago. The architecture of the museum is stunning and the Denver Library is right next to the museum and looks like 4 separated buildings.

At first the boys weren't too excited about visiting the museum but once we were inside and they got to see some of the artwork, they enjoyed it.

As with most museums, there are various themes throughout, each on a different floor.

My favorite part of the museum was the Modern & Contemporary Art.

I made my boys look the other way when we walked past this naked lady.

Fox Games is by Sandy Skoglund, a New Yorker. The idea behind this piece is that among all the friends and people we live and interact with (grey foxes), there is always someone who feels alone in the crowd (red fox - do you see it?). Warren & I identified with this because even though we live in the US and have friends and church family, we've always felt alone here. We're the red fox. (No sympathy needed or expected...its just a fact of life and we're used to it).

...and then I found the African art!

I walked around the corner and found this art piece that is so cool and amazing and it made me homesick but also proud to be from that gorgeous, dark continent.

The artist's name is El Anatsui and lives in Nigeria. He made the piece using the used tops of whiskey and other bottles he'd found over time and bound them together with copper wire. The art piece looks and folds like a large blanket.

Cullen came across some headphones and sat and listened to the music which happened to be African music. He was so excited and said, "I LOVE this music" and I reminded him that Africa is in his blood and will always be.
