Its Sunday and its cold. But we've been cooped up in the house for too long and Warren's been away all week in Ohio for a Kong event. (Ohio was even colder!)
We missed Warren. We missed the outdoors. We needed to get ourselves out into the fresh Colorado air and so we found The Lair of the Bear hiking and biking trail.
I was dressed in 3 layers (including a ski jacket) and this child only had on a t-shirt under his hoddie. Freaks me out that he can handle the cold so well. By the way, I have no idea what that finger sign means and I take no responsibility if its something rude. (He is his father's child!)
Jordan wasn't cold either and had a t-shirt on under his Justin Bieber shirt. Makes me shiver just to look at him like this.
He didn't want to admit it but Jordan was cold about 15 minutes into our walk so like all good mothers, I sacrificed and shed one of my layers to give to him. (My ski jacket had warmed me up by then otherwise I'm not sure I would have shed a thread for my freezing offspring!)
The boys love rocks. They love to climb on rocks. They love to jump off rocks. They are boys.
They also love sticks. They bring rocks and sticks home and leave them in my house. The rocks and sticks end up in our backyard and we own rocks and sticks from many areas in Colorado.
The boys love trees. They love to climb in and swing from trees.
They bring home sticks from these trees. They are boys after all.
The boys love water. They love to get their non-waterproof shoes wet and don't mind walking around in cold, wet socks.
I hate cold, wet socks except if I'm getting out of a pool in Arizona in the middle of summer. Then I don't mind cold, wet socks. I like to be dry. I am not a boy.
I love icy rivers. I love them when I'm dry and warm and when my kids aren't standing on the edge of them threatening to test the strength of the ice with their body weight.
The ice can be beautiful (although a bit dirty). I love these ice layers.
I love the icicles hanging in the ice cave. It makes me shiver but its still lovely.
I finally agreed this was a safe spot for my boys to 'test the ice' by throwing rocks into the river. Rocks aren't my offspring. Rocks can sink and die at the bottom of the river. I can allow rocks.
Rocks and sticks. That is all this kid wants in life.
Sometimes I think the older one would love to test his brother's weight on the ice. It felt like it was one of those days for these brothers.
This is the guy I mentioned who spent most of his week in Ohio. He's cute. I'll keep him.
I don't care for the dog much but I'll keep this guy especially since he's throwing out his 'grandpa jeans' and upgrading a little.
Jordan likes to walk with Warren and they have chats about everything from evolution and creation to recycling and writing in cursive.
Cullen loves me the most. He walks with me and doesn't stop chatting. From time to time he reluctantly leaves me to enjoy some testosterone-induced conversation.
And then he returns to me.
He loves his father. He loves his brother too but only when his brother is being nice and isn't trying to convince him to test his weight on an icy river.
Jordan is starting to enjoy his solitude in small segments. I know those segments are going to increase until one day it'll be switched around and I'll be the one enjoying small segments of Jordan.
I've told him he isn't allowed to grow up any more than he already has. He won't listen.
