Martin Luther King Day is on the 3rd Monday in January and it was signed into law as a public holiday by Ronald Reagan to honor King. Warren had the day off so we decided to visit the town of Manitou Springs which is just outside of Colorado Springs, about an hour's drive from our house.
Manitou Springs gets its name from 2 dozen mineral springs situated throughout the area. The minerals change the flavor of the local water. In the early 1900s the town became known as a place to relieve those suffering from tuberculosis and the clean air & mineral springs were part of a healthy retreat for people.
We got to Manitou Springs a bit early since most of the stores opened at 11 am which his pretty late. We hung out at the park for a while and then checked out the stores. By this time I knew that I'd be going to South Africa for Mom's 70th so I bought a few unusual gifts for my family. It got pretty cold as the day went on and so we headed home and had an early dinner at one of the restaurants stops on the way home.
