Marmite vs Bovril

My new favorite household item is my Marmite clock (a gift from Charlie & the High Priest).

The clock is a reminder of one of my favorite breakfast/snack spreads and whenever I look at the clock, I'm transported back to my primary (elementary/middle) school days. I had Marmite sandwiches for lunch many times during those awkward years.

Marmite is great on white toast. My favorite bread these days is the sourdough variety. It has a unique taste and since most of the breads in the grocery store taste sweet to me (yuck), my carbohydrate of choice is white sourdough bread.

Holes aren't good because it means less Marmite and fewer carbs. But when you're at the end of the loaf, holes are OK.

I love Marmite but once Bovril came onto the scene, my loyalties changed. Bovril has been my #1 spread for decades but Marmite is a very close (by 2 millimeters) second.

When the spread comes out of the Bovril jar and slowly drips down onto the bread, my saliva glands go crazy.

The only other compliment to Bovril (and Marmite) is a big, hunking slice of cheddar. You don't even need bread at this point although the cheddar/ Bovril combo on white toast is really good.

Once you have your bread and/or cheddar with Bovril or Marmite, the best way to consume it is in a quiet room all by yourself. You must savor the moment because once you've eaten your first one, you will be hooked and will have to go and make yourself another...and another...and another...

Oh and sharing is not recommended!
